We wanted to create a space to reflect on the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.urbanitae.com\/en\/2025\/10\/07\/financial-education-day-investing-with-knowledge-means-investing-better\/?utm_source=blog_en&#038;utm_medium=organic&#038;utm_campaign=urbanitae_blog_1025&#038;utm_term=financial_education_1&#038;utm_content=en_hablar_dinero_es_educacion_financiera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial education<\/a> in Spain, its structural shortcomings, and its role as a tool for personal autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate, moderated by <strong>Fernando Alonso<\/strong>, partner at finReg360, brought together representatives from the financial and advisory sectors: <strong>Leonardo L\u00f3pez (ODDO BHF), Jorge Gonz\u00e1lez-Iglesias (Gibobs Allbanks), Carlos Garc\u00eda Ciriza (Aseafi), Sara Carbonell (Banco BIG), Victoria Torre (Self Bank), and Jaime Albella (CFA Society Spain)<\/strong>. Urbanitae was represented by our CEO, Diego Bestard. Here are some of the topics discussed during the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Culture of Money (and Silence)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During his speech, <strong>Diego Bestard<\/strong> emphasized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.funcas.es\/documentos_trabajo\/cuando-falta-cultura-financiera-gestionar-la-economia-del-hogar-sin-herramientas-suficientes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that financial education in Spain is not only scarce<\/a> but also remains a topic people tend to avoid. \u201cIn the United States, it is common to talk about money within families, at school, or with friends. Here it is still a taboo. Money is neither taught nor discussed, and this has consequences,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in some neighboring countries students study business subjects as early as age 13, in Spain \u201chome economics and basic personal finance management are still absent from the school curriculum,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his view, <strong>financial education should be taught as a core subject<\/strong>, on par with English or mathematics. But it should also be seen as a cultural shift: \u201cIt\u2019s not enough to learn about compound interest; we need to normalize conversations about money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saving, Investing, and Planning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of financial education directly affects people\u2019s ability to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.urbanitae.com\/en\/2024\/03\/20\/4-risks-of-not-investing-your-savings\/?utm_source=blog_en&#038;utm_medium=organic&#038;utm_campaign=urbanitae_blog_1025&#038;utm_term=save_invest_and_plan_future&#038;utm_content=en_hablar_dinero_es_educacion_financiera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">save, invest, and plan for the future<\/a><\/strong>. Many Spaniards do not have a financial strategy or make full use of investment tools to grow their savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to be an economist, but everyone should have basic knowledge of personal finance. Managing income, expenses, and savings should be as fundamental as reading or writing,\u201d said our CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several experts agreed on the tendency of Spaniards towards <strong>short-term thinking<\/strong>, which remains deeply rooted. For example, many consistently choose bank deposits when there are safe, profitable options that allow building long-term wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the causes of this behavior, Diego pointed to <strong>lack of planning<\/strong>, excessive reliance on the public pension system, and limited tax education. \u201cIn Spain, there is a sense of social safety\u2014State, family, friends\u2014that, although positive, reduces the incentive to plan long-term,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Gap and New Generations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most discussed topics was <strong>digital inclusion<\/strong>. While younger generations navigate the digital environment easily, a significant portion of the population still struggles to manage finances online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Bestard highlighted the positive role of technology: \u201cDigitalization has democratized access to investing. Today, anyone can invest easily, safely, and transparently, without advanced knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everything is positive. The younger generations show <strong>more curiosity and interest in investing and understanding money<\/strong>, but that curiosity must be paired with <strong>education and judgment<\/strong>. \u201cCuriosity is good, but without knowledge it can lead to mistakes. <a href=\"https:\/\/mkt.urbanitae.com\/urbanitae_academy.html?utm_source=blog_en&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=urbanitae_blog_1025&amp;utm_term=financial_education_2&amp;utm_content=en_hablar_dinero_es_educacion_financiera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial education<\/a> must channel that energy into informed decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spain and Europe: Two Speeds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.urbanitae.com\/en\/2024\/11\/23\/why-is-there-a-lack-of-investment-culture-in-spain\/?utm_source=blog_en&#038;utm_medium=organic&#038;utm_campaign=urbanitae_blog_1025&#038;utm_term=spain_lags_behind_european_countries_financial_education&#038;utm_content=en_hablar_dinero_es_educacion_financiera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spain lags behind other European countries in financial education<\/a>. The speakers agreed on the diagnosis: an educational system that does not prioritize practical training, a culture that avoids talking about money, and excessive reliance on the State to address future economic needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, there is room for optimism and a sense of opportunity. A shift in trends among younger generations is evident. \u201cThere is more interest, awareness, and willingness to learn.
